From what I understand, the goal of a paly tank is to reach the cap of 102.4% total avoidance at which point every incoming attack is either a miss, parry, dodge, or block.

This is largely made possible by being able to maintain holy shield for and extra 30% block chance.

Quote:
The important thing to be aware of here is that the more of each kind of avoidance you have, the more valuable the rest of your avoidance becomes. Every increase in your chance to parry, dodge, or block comes directly out of your chance to take a hit.
This is probably one of the most important factors in all tanking.

So for defense over 400, each 1 defense skill adds .04 miss, parry, dodge, and block.

So at the base 540 defense to become crit immune, you'll also have an extra 5.6% chance to miss, parry, dodge, and block for a total of 22.4% avoidance. Enemies have a base 5% chance to miss, so you're up to 27.4% avoidance. Your base parry & dodge should be at least 5%, so that's another 10% for a total of 37.4%. 67.4% with holy shield. 72.4% with 5% parry from deflection. 77.4% with the 5% dodge from anticipation. The remainder being gained through parry, dodge, block rating, or additional defense on gear. Regardless, that is a high amount of avoidance for the base 540 defense. Redoubt procing adds an additional 30% chance to block, but shouldn't be counted on since it is a chance occurrence.

Tankadins also gain a lot of flat damage reduction. 9% less damage with righteous fury up. 3% from having on blessing of sanctuary. 3% from shield of the templar. 6% less vs spell damage from guarded by the light. That's 15% less damage overall and 21% less vs spells. Then when at less than 35% health, argent crusader reduces damage by a further 30%!!!

Popular glyph choices seem to be vengeance, righteous defense, and judgment. With vengeance glyphed and the combat expertise talent, you need very little expertise from gear. 5 expertise rating to get around dodge. More to get around parry, but expertise is s a minimal gain in your threat generation at best.

Tank 0/58/13 General tank build without kings. Swap reckoning for kings if absolutely needed.

276 hit for cap. Some paly spells are subject to spell hit, but its not really worth going for the spell hit cap.

Also just like ret pallies, tankadins no longer require the spell damage gear that was used in tbc. Their abilities are now scaled off AP, so they gear up similarly to warriors now. Value STR and STAM highly.

Basic single target threat would be using holy shield, seal of vengeance, judgment, and shield of righteousness.

For aoe, add consecration, avenger's shield, and hammer of righteousness.

Overall, keeping up holy shield is the highest priority.

The tank rotation is known commonly as the 969 rotation. The name 969 comes from the pattern of abilities used. Pallie abilities use either a 9 sec cooldown or a 6 second cooldown. The rotation alternates between using an ability with a 9 sec cooldown and a 6 second cooldown, 96969696969...and so on. Hence the abbreviated title of 969.

This rotation is the reason 2 talent points in improved judgments is a waste and why the glyph of consecration is a poor choice.

9sec: holy shield, consecration, judgment
6sec: Shield or Hammer of righteousness

Renewing your seal or other abilities can be used as needed in place of either a 9 or 6.
